About Our Book

Winner of many professional accolades, Foster Cline, M.D. is the senior author of Parenting with Love and Logic and Parenting Teens with Love and Logic. Both books are best sellers, have been translated into 7 foreign languages and have been reprinted in new editions by NavPress. In addition to these respected and widely used parenting books, Dr. Cline has co-authored Can this Child be Saved?, Grandparenting with Love and Logic, and many other works. The publications of the Love and Logic Institute, which Dr. Cline co-founded with Jim Fay, are used in school systems throughout the nation.

Co-Author Lisa C. Greene, who first recognized the need for this specialty area of Love and Logic, is the mother of two children with cystic fibrosis. She shares her personal experiences and insights as she raises her two special children with Love and Logic’s powerful and life-changing parenting tools.

Large numbers of today’s parents are coping with children who have significant medical issues. Those who aren’t today might be tomorrow:

  • Eating disorders, including childhood obesity, are an epidemic problem. About one-third of America’s children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight[i].
  • 35% of America’s children were affected by asthma and allergies in 2005[ii].
  • In 2004, 13% of American children had a health problem for which prescription medication was taken regularly for at least three months.[iii]

Parents of these millions of children with health issues face significant parenting challenges. Children often become rebellious and non-compliant around necessary medical treatments, medication and dietary requirements. This can cause increased health problems and, in some instances, premature death.  Parents are uncertain about where to draw the lines of expectation and discipline so their children are at great risk for becoming entitled and demanding. Family dynamics are impacted when siblings struggle with the many difficulties they are faced with.  Couple relationships become stressed when parents cope day after day with the significant drains on financial and emotional resources that their ill children require. All of these issues affect not only individual families but also schools, communities and the workplace. We can only guess at the added costs to our healthcare system for pediatric medical non-compliance.

This book offers practical, concise answers to these problems that are specifically illustrated by more than eighty examples and transcripts. Parenting Children with Health Issues, in the Love and Logic tradition, not only tells readers how to respond but also shows them how to respond to these difficult situations.

The response of one popular San Francisco Bay Area pediatrician is typical of the professionals who have reviewed copies of this book:

“I literally felt as though the authors had been sitting in the corners of my exam rooms for the past thirty years. Every parent of a child with special healthcare needs will see themselves and their children within these pages. I highly recommend this book to colleagues and patients as required reading.”    - Tracy L. Trotter, MD, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics
